In a surprising move, the Philippines House of Representatives is urging that vaping be included in the country’s tobacco control strategy. The legislative body issued a resolution asking the health department to promote tobacco harm reduction. The resolution, authored by Reps. Anthony Bravo and Jose Tejada, references the experience in the U.K., where public health authorities have promoted vaping as a safer alternative for cigarette smokers. According to the Manila Standard, the lawmakers specifically cite the landmark reports from Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians. A resolution is not law or even binding on the regulators. It is … Continue reading Philippines Legislature Backs Vaping
Underage vaping. FDA crackdowns. Trade tariffs on Chinese e-cig products. American vapers have had a rough 2018. Teen vaping is at the tipping point before possible epidemic levels, federal officials and public health advocates agree, but they’re feuding over how fast and far to go to rein in the booming electronic cigarette industry. Some of the health groups that sued the Food and Drug Administration for delaying regulation of vape products by four years charged last week that the agency let several new devices similar to the youth-favored Juul hit the market without approval. Companies “have introduced new products at an alarming pace in total defiance of law, with no apparent concern for FDA enforcement,” the groups wrote. More than 2 million middle school, high school … Continue reading Teens hooked by vaping: FDA weighing a ban on flavored e-cigarette liquids

JUUL is the vape giant that went from zero to $16 billion in three years. Truth Initiative is the largest anti-smoking organization in the United States. Both the company and the non-profit claim to have the same goal: helping smokers quit tobacco cigarettes. But Robin Koval, CEO and president of Truth Initiative, hasn’t been shy about slamming JUUL. “The fact that JUUL is acting like, ‘What, young people are using JUUL? We never intended that to happen,’ is a little disingenuous,” she said. Oh yes, that. Teenagers love JUUL. Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are filled with #juul references. The case against Juul is also partly a case against nicotine. By June 2018, a New York teenager’s addiction to Juul had become so intense that his parents took the door off his room, switched him to a different school, and asked that he be followed to the bathroom — all in an effort to prevent him from juuling. “He couldn’t stop, and so as a result, he’s not really having a normal teenage life at the moment,” says Jason Solotaroff, an attorney at Giskan, Solotaroff, and Anderson LLP who is representing the family. The complaint, filed by the teenager’s mother, … Continue reading Is nicotine actually bad for you?
