San Francisco weighing first-of-its-kind ban on e-cigarettes

The California city already prohibits the sale of flavored tobacco and flavored vaping liquid. SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco is trying to crack down on electronic cigarettes that critics say aggressively target kids. An official on Tuesday proposed what’s thought to be the first U.S. ban on their sale until the federal government regulates vaping products. City Attorney Dennis Herrera said San Francisco, Chicago and New York sent a joint letter demanding that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration evaluate the effect of e-cigarettes on public health. Herrera said the review should have been completed before e-cigarettes entered the market. … Continue reading San Francisco weighing first-of-its-kind ban on e-cigarettes

Flavored vapes draw FDA ire, with some exceptions

Today, the Food and Drug Administration took another step towards limiting the sale of sweet-flavored e-cigarettes in places where kids can buy them. But public health experts wonder if the move will be enough to make a dent in the massive increase of youth vaping. After announcing plans in November to restrict the sale of e-cigarettes that come in kid-friendly flavors, the FDA today issued what’s called a “draft guidance” that starts to spell out how the agency intends to do so. For one thing, if the FDA catches companies marketing sweet-flavored e-cigarette products to kids or selling them in places minors can shop, the … Continue reading Flavored vapes draw FDA ire, with some exceptions

Clearing the air about e-cigarettes, vaping, nicotine and health

Consumer Reports has no financial relationship with any advertisers on this site. The promise of electronic cigarettes is straightforward: Lifelong smokers can wean themselves off a toxic habit in favor of an alternative that isn’t packed with tobacco and dozens of unsafe carcinogens. But e-cigarettes and vaping products present health concerns of their own, experts say, and that’s due in part to nicotine. That was a point underscored last week when the Food and Drug Administration proposed a policy designed to restrict how and where flavored e-cigarettes are sold — an effort to combat what the agency’s commissioner has called … Continue reading Clearing the air about e-cigarettes, vaping, nicotine and health

The Uncertain Future of the E-Cigarette Industry in New York

E-cigarettes and vaping have received a very mixed reception in New York.  While the multiplying number of vape shops and booming e-cigarette sales would suggest a surefire rise for the industry in our State, growing opposition from the public and multiple levels of government could nip the industry in the bud. In 2017, Governor Cuomo signed into law an amendment to the Clean Indoor Air Act prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes and vaping products in any setting where the smoking of traditional tobacco products is prohibited. See Public Health Law §§ 1399-N, 1399-O.  This includes most indoor settings as well as certain … Continue reading The Uncertain Future of the E-Cigarette Industry in New York

The FDA’s formal vaping proposal is finally here

After what seemed like a million incremental announcements, the Food and Drug Administration formally released its proposal yesterday to restrict the sale of flavored vape products, in the hopes of curbing their popularity among teens. The big picture is pretty much what we expected: Physical stores must either keep out everyone younger than 18 or keep their e-cigarette supplies in a separate room inaccessible to underage customers. Online retailers must use age-verification tools. What they’re saying: “They are picking winners and losers in the marketplace while handing a government monopoly to other channels of trade,” the National Association of Convenience Stores said, per … Continue reading The FDA’s formal vaping proposal is finally here
